On Behalf of | Mar 23, 2021 | Uninsured/Underinsured Auto Insurance Claims | 0 comments

While many states in the U.S. require motorists to carry auto insurance, the fact of the matter is that some people do not. According to the Insurance Research Council, approximately one in eight motorists do not have an auto insurance policy. So, what happens if you are driving in Austin and are struck by a driver who does not have adequate auto insurance or perhaps no auto insurance at all? If you have uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, this may be a significant source of compensation.

What are the two types of uninsured motorist coverage?

There are four main types of insurance that falls under the umbrella of uninsured motorist coverage. The first is uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage. This compensates the motor vehicle accident victim for bodily injury if an at-fault motorist with no insurance causes a car crash. The second is uninsured motorist property damage coverage. This covers damage to the motor vehicle accident victim’s automobile if they are struck by an uninsured driver.

What are the two types of underinsured motorist coverage?

The first is underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage. This compensates the motor vehicle accident victim for bodily injury if an at-fault motorist causes a car crash but does not have sufficient liability insurance to fully compensate the victim for damages suffered. The second is underinsured motorist property damage coverage. This compensates the motor vehicle accident victim for damage to their automobile if they are struck by an at-fault motorist who does not have sufficient liability insurance to fully compensate the victim for damages suffered.

What does Texas require motorists carry in uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage?

In Texas, there are certain requirements regarding how much motorists must carry in uninsured motorist coverage. First, insurers must offer motorists uninsured motorist coverage. The minimum uninsured motorist coverage that must be carried is 30/60. Uninsured motorist property damage is also required, with a minimum coverage amount of $25,000.
